In this episode of the *Mindset Matters* podcast, hosts Patrick and Steffany dive into the metaphor of the "relationship rowboat," reflecting on the dynamics of relationships, particularly in the wake of recent global events. They begin by reminiscing about their busy and fulfilling summer, full of travel, family visits, and social gatherings, highlighting the importance of cherishing these moments.
The core of the discussion centers around the concept of the "relationship rowboat," a metaphor they originally used to explain to their daughter the ebb and flow of friendships. They explore how this metaphor applies not just to friendships but to all types of relationships, including business and romantic ones. The idea is that in any relationship, both parties must contribute to keep the "boat" moving forward. However, life’s challenges, such as the stresses brought on by global events or personal struggles, can cause one person to stop rowing, leaving the other to carry the burden or risk the relationship stalling or sinking.
Patrick and Steffany emphasize the importance of communication and self-awareness in maintaining healthy relationships. They discuss how it's vital to recognize when someone has stopped rowing, either because of personal reasons or external pressures, and to respond with understanding rather than resentment. They also highlight the need to reflect on whether we ourselves have stopped contributing to a relationship and the significance of being honest about our capacity to engage fully.
The episode closes with a powerful message about the flow of life and relationships, encouraging listeners to remain open and non-judgmental, allowing people to come and go as needed without taking it personally. The hosts leave their audience with the thought-provoking question: Are you rowing in your relationship rowboat, or have you let go of the oars without realizing it?

In the latest episode of the "Mindset Matters" podcast, hosts Patrick Francey and Steffany-Hanlen Francey dive into an emotionally charged conversation reflecting on Steffany’s recent return from Paris, where she attended the Summer Olympics. Although her athletes didn’t compete, Steffany shares a remarkable story of how she came home with a significant recognition.
Steffany reveals that she received a medal, not from a current event, but from the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The medal, awarded by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, honors coaches who have significantly impacted athletes who went on to win medals. Steffany’s athletes won silver and bronze medals in the team event, but due to a doping scandal, their medals were only recently awarded, delaying the moment of recognition.
This episode is a journey into the emotional complexity of celebrating success. Steffany discusses why she kept the medal tucked away for two and a half years, feeling it was incomplete until her athletes received their medals. She draws parallels between her experience and the broader theme of waiting for the right moment to celebrate, emphasizing the importance of completion in any journey.
Patrick and Steffany also touch on the dynamics of their relationship, exploring how they support each other’s individual pursuits while maintaining a strong partnership. Patrick explains why he doesn’t travel with Steffany during her work trips, underscoring the importance of respecting each other’s professional lanes and roles.
The episode is a compelling reflection on the value of patience, the power of delayed gratification, and the deep satisfaction that comes from seeing a long journey through to its rightful end. It’s a must-listen for anyone interested in the mindset required to navigate the highs and lows of a career dedicated to supporting others.

In the latest episode of *Mindset Matters*, hosts Patrick Francey and Steffany-Hanlen Francey dive into an array of compelling topics, beginning with a unique Olympic experience in Paris. Steffany recounts her time at the Summer Olympics, highlighting the emotional medal ceremony for athletes she coaches in figure skating. This ceremony was a long-awaited moment, occurring two years after the original event due to a scandal relating to another team that delayed the awarding of medals. Despite the challenging circumstances, the Paris Olympic Games provided a stunning and memorable backdrop for this special moment, which was celebrated in front of thousands, including the athletes' friends and families.
Steffany reflects on the importance of trust in the process and how her athletes maintained focus and positivity during the two-year wait. She emphasizes the critical role of mindset in navigating such uncertainties, reminding listeners that mindset is often more important than physical preparation. This experience reinforced her belief that leaving room for the "magic" of the unexpected can lead to powerful outcomes.
They also revisit last week’s conversation on generosity. They discuss how generosity, when not reciprocated or acknowledged, can lead to an imbalance in relationships, often resulting in resentment. The discussion extends to the dynamics of giving and receiving, noting how important it is to maintain a balance to prevent expectations from turning into dependencies.
The hosts also touch on the disparity between social media portrayals and reality, especially concerning the unrest in Paris during the Olympics. Despite reports of chaos, Steffany found the city calm and welcoming, a reminder that what we see online isn't always the full story.
Throughout the episode, the underlying message is clear: mindset truly matters, whether in sports, relationships, or navigating the complexities of life. Patrick and Steffany encourage listeners to be mindful of their perspectives, to trust the process, and to strive for balance in all areas of life.

In this episode of the Mindset Matters podcast, host Patrick Francey flies solo as Steffany is enjoying her time in Paris. Patrick begins by sharing his summer plans, including meeting Steffany in Montreal.
Patrick reflects on his and Steffany's natural inclination towards generosity and the unintended consequences it can sometimes bring. He emphasizes that their generosity, often given without expectation, can become normalized by the recipients, leading to an imbalance in relationships.
Patrick shares an anecdote about Steffany’s experiences as a coach, where she often provided guidance and support to friends without charging for her time. This led to a realization that her generosity was being taken for granted. Patrick draws parallels with his own experiences, highlighting the importance of managing expectations around generosity to prevent it from becoming an unappreciated norm.
He also discusses the complications that arise when financial generosity is mixed with personal relationships, cautioning against making emotional decisions without proper consideration. Patrick stresses the importance of being conscious about the extent of one’s generosity and ensuring that it is not taken for granted.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Patrick acknowledges that he too might have normalized the generosity of others without fully appreciating it. He considers reaching out to those who have been generous to him to express his gratitude and acknowledge their kindness.
As the episode concludes, Patrick invites listeners to share their own stories of generosity and expresses his hope that they are enjoying their summer. He looks forward to reconnecting with Steffany in the next episode and sharing more insights and stories.
